The white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) has evolved and adapted to global climate change and natural disasters for 200 million years. Yet, in less than 150 years, humanity has brought this species close to extinction. This begs the question, how has the fate of this prehistoric fish ended up in human hands? The sturgeon’s ability to adapt has been jeopardized because of its scavenger like feeding behavior, habitat destruction and toxins from farming and industry. The irony of this scenario is that humanity has been evolving for a meager 20 thousand years, and unlike the sturgeon, humans have managed to completely upset the balance of nature.
