Blue-and-yellow macaws are one of the more popular and recognizable members of the large parrot family. Unfortunately, their brightly coloured feathers and sociable personalities make them desirable to exotic pet owners and the illegal pet trade. Macaws require extra special attention, and they need a large adequate space in which to live, play and exercise. At the Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver, the macaws have all the necessities of life provided for in a healthy and stimulating environment. Unlike a well-meaning pet owner’s home, the Conservatory’s domed, tropical paradise with its lush plant life, mimics their natural habitat. In the wild, the macaw pair for life, breeding in the swampy tropical rain forests of South America from Panama south to Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay.
